I completely understand what you're trying to describe at the beginning of teh article. That need to share with others that beautiful book that made you feel alive again. Sadly this can be done only with people who already read it otherwise we might risk spoiling the fun. This is why I enrolled into a book club. I always find there people who understand the need to talk about a book until all the ideas are told.

Yes, I was imagining her with the wall of her writing room covered with stickies, with a complex web of strings looping back and forth between different events. How she kept the relative ages of her characters straight, I will never know.

It's an awesome book! I just finished reading again myself.

It's a really well written first book, especially when you consider the convoluted story-line.

I read this more than 2 years ago, when it was on the bestseller lists. I liked it, but wasn't as impressed, and did think it was rather chick-lit-ish. (I dug through the archives of my now-abandoned Vox blog and found what I thought at the time.) I'm female too by the way and even like chick lit in moderation, but this one..just left me cold in many ways.

I found out that they were making a film after I read the book and I'm similarly concerned about whether they will mess it up. It might be The Golden Compass/Northern Lights all over again :-)

I had to read your description of the plot a couple of times before I grokked it (because of the complexity of the plot, not your description!) It sounds fun - if you remember what the book or collection was, I'd love to read it.

I recall a SciFi story I read many years ago concerning a man who went back in time and made love to a woman. A baby girl was born, which he took back in time and left with a foster family, then returned to his own time in the future. The mother in due course had a sex change operation, and became... the man in question! This individual was thus his/her own father and mother.

Piece of nonsense, of course, but your review reminded me of this story. It must have been 40 years ago I read it...
